Currently reading The Green Collar Economy after starting in with Natural Capitalism by Hawken and Friedman's Hot, Flat & Crowded. Hawken's book is incredible and very moving and profound, talking more about corporate-social-responsibility and the idea of the triple bottom line, ideas which most likely originated or evolved with his work. Friedman's book is really thrilling as well, although it becomes very redundant about halfway through the text- you can only listen to the phrase 'hot, flat and crowded' so many times before it loses its charm.
So moving on to Van Jones, this text is about a bottom up approach to a green movement, one that is all encompassing and does not isolate itself among an "eco-elite". While very politically charged and constantly bringing this movement back to racial divides and tensions in America, it is a great book that simply bears the message that a movement of this kind can end our country's dependence on oil while simultaneously creating jobs for people of all backgrounds from across the nation.
What happened to Van Jones during the Glenn Beck/FoxNews witchhunt was depressing, and probably a factor in what brought me back here. I had been exploring other career paths, but for a movement like this to happen it needs some reinforcements, and people ready and willing to sweat, bleed, and take punches from right-wing media to make real, positive and lasting change for our country--else it will wither and die as it has so tellingly begun to already.
