Obama Back On Clean Energy Stump

In the wake of some pretty dismal financial times that began shortly before the election of Obama, the President's clean energy agenda -- a cornerstone of both his and McCain's respective campaign platforms -- has slowed its momentum a bit. President Obama even made a speech last month to reaffirm this element of his agenda and policy, but cautioned that such progress is difficult during a recession. The purpose of the speech was not to rally support or act as a catalyst for energy reform, but rather to merely remind the American public (and the world) that he had not forgotten about it.

However, a recent speech and MIT could perhaps be laying the groundwork for some clean energy initiatives of the future, and is also very timely (maybe too much so) considering the coming UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen this December.

What Obama's recent speech does offer is a confirmation of the practicality and necessity of moving toward clean energy reform for a better future, a future the President wants, envisions, and is ready to help achieve. Arguably, the visionary speeches that helped Obama win the white house-- but have not necessarily manifested themselves yet-- can be compared to this MIT speech. They are more of a general pitch regarding the movement to inspire and rally people around an idea.



What everyone must remember, however, is the horrible quagmire into which Obama waded in January of '09. If he has indeed righted the ship (or led us out of the mud) and the country has re-stabilized itself, then progress in the form of clean energy reform and other endeavors to help rebuild America are certainly right around the corner.
